Exhibitions: The Art of Video Games / American Art
“The Art of Video Games is one of the first exhibitions to explore the forty-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects and the creative use of new technologies. It features some of the most influential artists and designers during five eras of game technology, from early pioneers to contemporary designers. The exhibition focuses on the interplay of graphics, technology and storytelling through some of the best games for twenty gaming systems ranging from the Atari VCS to the PlayStation 3. “
When Video Gaming is Good for You INFOGRAPHIC as seen in the Wall Street Journal.
“The violent action games that often worry parents most had the strongest beneficial effect on the brain. “These are not the games you would think are mind-enhancing,” said cognitive neuroscientist Daphne Bavelier, who studies the effect of action games at Switzerland’s University of Geneva and the University of Rochester in New York.”
When Gaming Is Good for You
An interesting article in the Wall Street Journal about the psychology of video gaming.
…between now and the inevitable end of our days, we can choose either to live or to die. Biological life is an automatic process, as long as we take care of the needs of the body. But to live in the sense the poet means it is by no means something that will happen itself. In fact everything conspires against it; if we don’t take charge of its direction, our life will be controlled by the outside to serve the purpose of some other agency. Biologically programmed instincts will use it to replicate the genetic material we carry; the culture will make sure that we use it to propagate its values and institutions; and other people will try to take as much of our energy as possible to further their own agenda–all of this without regard to how any of this will affect us. We cannot expect anyone to help us live; we must discover how to do it by ourselves.

Lawrence Ripsher: Mindfulness Reading List
Following a post about Wisdom 2.0, I was asked if there are any good books to read up on mindfulness, positive psychology, etc. There are actually dozens (hundreds?) on the topic, but I’ve read a few in the past 18 months. Here’s a list - I recommend all these:
- Beyond Happiness, Ezra Bayda
- Switch
